I’ll admit, I’ve often been guilty of thinking the more expensive a product is, the ‘better’ it will be. And while often it’s true that you get what you pay for, I’ve found with makeup this is not always the case. Of course I love a bit of luxury in my makeup bag, but it’s not always necessary. So I thought I’d pop together a little post with the kinds of items that I feel are well worth the splurge, and the more purse-friendly heroes that do the job just as well! Here’s my ‘when to splurge and when to save’ list…
Splurge…
Foundation
When it comes to my foundation, I definitely favour higher-end. In my experience, with foundation I have mostly found that you get what you pay for; from higher quality ingredients to better staying power. I’ve waxed lyrical here about my go to – the Magic Foundation by Charlotte Tilbury.
Eyeshadows
Eyeshadows are perhaps my favourite makeup item. Palettes, for me, are like toys to children – they’re a real source of fun. I take such delight in their pretty colours and could happily play with them all day! So the quality is extremely important for me. I’ve found brands like Charlotte Tilbury, Too Faced and Urban Decay are incredibly pigmented and really last on the ‘lids. My current go-tos are the Golden Goddess, Pillow Talk and Exaggereyes palettes by Charlotte Tilbury and the Too Faced Peach palette.
Save…
Mascara
My ultimate mascara is Great Lash by Maybelline. Being in production for fifty+ years, this mascara has stood the test of time and you get serious bang for your buck. It gives my lashes volume and thickness yet doesn’t flake. I’ve tried many other mascaras over the years, both high end and high street, but Great Lash is the one I return to again and again.
Lipsticks
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love luxurious lipsticks, like Charlotte Tilbury’s dreamy offerings as I shared previously. But I think there are so many great value lipsticks out there that you don’t have to break the bank to get a gorgeous pout. L’Oreal and Maybelline are a couple of my favourite drugstore brands for lippies.
What are your thoughts? When do you splurge and save? x

I’m totally with you on splurging for base products! You can’t beat quality ingredients, and I swear by my IT Cosmetics CC Cream. I’ll never go back! I’m totally willing and interested in splurging on more high-end base products and have a few on my wish list that I’m excited to try out.

Absolutely! It’s definitely worth splashing out for the better quality. I haven’t tried IT Cosmetics but you’ve reminded me, I have been meaning to try their Bye Bye Under Eye, I must add it and the CC Cream you mentioned to my list!
