Autumn in Austria

Ohhhh Vienna!

Has anyone heard of Sachertorte? Vienna's world famous sweet treat, a chocolate cake with apricot jam, was admittedly the only thing I knew about the city before visiting a couple of weeks ago. (I know it even better now, having scoffed four (!) slices, in four days...)*

Delicious treats aside, Vienna is such a beautiful city. Especially in the Autumn, where the golden browns and golds enhance the whimsical feel of the town. From the stunning architecture at every turn, to the horse and carriage rides clip-clopping down the streets, it was just like stepping into a fairytale. Yet while honouring its traditions and rich history, Vienna is also a very modern, cosmopolitan city that has something for everyone.

Jamie and I took the Big Bus tour, which I'd recommend in a heartbeat. It allowed us to see everything easily (sometimes I find it overwhelming knowing where to even begin!) and hop on and off at our leisure. Our favourite stop was the Schönbrunn Palace, the stunning summer residence of the Habsburgs - similar to, but in my opinion more beautiful and interesting, than Versailles. We also did plenty of exploring around the city centre on foot, where I snapped these photos.

*and in case you were wondering, our favourite places for Sachertorte were Café Schwarzenberg and Café Mozart - both of these charming, traditional Viennese cafés are among the city's oldest coffee houses. Truly like stepping back in time!
